A Nutshell of Immigration Changes Under President Trump, Possible Future Changes
Elliott Spagat for Associated Press summarizes the immigration changes brought in the first week of the second Trump administration. He lists
Immigration Arrests
Deportations
“Some steps that could have a major impact have yet to be seen on a large scale” — examples given are (1) the end of the protection of “sensitive locations,” such as schools, churches, and hospitals, for immigration operations, from enforcement operations, and (2) attacks on so-called sanctuary jurisdictions.
Border Enforcement
Other Steps — attempt to end of birthright citizenship, suspend refugee admissions, etc.
There are some other changes that I see coming, many of which we saw in the first Trump administration:
Limits on Temporary Protected Status Designations
Restructuring of the Board of Immigration Appeals and Attorney General Interventions in Decisions
End of humanitarian parole and removal of recipients
The final rescission of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) policy? President Trump has suggested that a bipartisan compromise to protect DACA recipients might be possible.
Regular, highly-publicized immigration enforcement operations
