At the Movies: The Brutalist

IMDb describes the 2024 film The Brutalist “[w]hen a visionary architect and his wife flee post-war Europe in 1947 to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern United States, their lives are changed forever by a mysterious, wealthy client.”

Jocelyn Noveck for the Associated Press says that The Brutalist, “which takes its name from the raw style of architecture . . . , is also about the incalculable trauma that followed World War II. It’s about the immigrant experience, and it’s about what happens when the American Dream beckons, then fails.”

Last night, The Golden Globes honored The Brutalist as best movie drama and star Adrien Brody won best film actor.

Stephanie Zacharek for Time describes the opening: “The film opens with that suitably jarring, shaky-cam arrival at Ellis Island.”
