It is official. South Dakota Republican Governor Kristi Noem is the nation’s next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security after the U.S. Senate confirmed her nomination this weekend.
Noem, a former member of Congress, leads one of the federal government’s largest departments, with 260,000 employees and a budget in excess of $100 billion. Its responsibilities include immigration and border protection, disaster response, cyber and airline security, and protecting dignitaries.
The vote to confirm Noem was 59-34.
Newsweek reported that Noem on the subject of immigration “has said America is facing an invasion, expressed her support for Trump’s Muslim ban, explained why her state would not be taking any homeless migrants, and voiced support for Texas Governor Greg Abbott, offering to deliver razor wire for the southern border.”
