For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, there is a program on Mass Deportation: How History Shapes the Coming Fight on January 17. Among the speakers are California State Senator Josh Becker (D – Menlo Park) who, with Senate Majority Leader Lena Gonzalez (D-Long Beach) co-authored California Senate Bill 537. Signed into law by Governor Newsom, the law calls for a state commemoration in the form of a statue or other appropriate memorialization of the Mexican Repatriation of the 1930s—a period of forced deportations and injustices that devastated hundreds of thousands of Mexican and Mexican-American families and left a lasting scar on the community that continues to this day.
California State Assemblymember Liz Ortega (D – District 20) also is a speaker.
