Noncitizens detained at mandatory check-ins and court hearings

Home

Is it safe for noncitizens to check in with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or appear at immigration court hearings?  The Guardian reports that ICE check-ins for some New Yorkers now mean confiscated passports, ankle monitor requirements and fingerprinting for kids. In New Jersey, noncitizens are being arrested at appointments as well.  “People attending recent mandatory immigration check-ins or court appearances have been escorted out in federal custody after the Trump administration allegedly tricked, lied to or otherwise deceived them as part of its mass deportation campaign.”

President Trump now allows ICE to conduct enforcement operations at courthouses, including in immigration courts.
