Trump Greenlights Refugee Status for Certain White South Africans

Official White House Photo

President Trump has suspended the U.S. refugee admissions program.  However, as Lexis Nexis Immigration reports (Trump Greenlights Refugee Status for Certain White South Africans), President Trump as opened the doors to white South Afrikaners.  Section 4 of Addressing Egregious Actions of The Republic of South Africa states that

“[t]he Secretary of State and the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take appropriate steps, consistent with law, to prioritize humanitarian relief, including admission and resettlement through the United States Refugee Admissions Program, for Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination.  Such plan shall be submitted to the President through the Assistant to the President and Homeland Security Advisor.”

ImmigrationProf blogger Austin Kocher provides an explanation of the executive order here.  As he states,

“Trump signed a new executive order that lays bare the underlying racial dimensions of his nationalist policies. At a time when the United States is deporting Black and Latino immigrants to politically and economically unstable countries, Trump has instructed his agencies to prioritize the resettlement of white `refugees’ from South Africa, aka `Afrikaner refugees.'”

It appears that Afrikaner groups in South Africa are declining President Trump’s South African refugee resettlement plan. See here.

The executive order halts all U.S. aid to South Africa.
