Italy May Repurpose Detention Facilities in Albania as “Return Hubs”
Alessia Peretti of EURACTIV.it reports that Italy may repurpose currently empty detention facilities in Albania as “Centers for Permanent Repatriation (CPR).”
Currently the facilities are empty as litigation regarding their use is ongoing, with a ruling from the European Court of Justice pending. As we have posted previously on the blog, there has been ongoing criticism of the remote Albanian facilities.
According to Italy’s Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, as quoted in the article, “The Albanian centers could help strengthen the repatriation system for irregular migrants who have no right to remain in Italy,”
