Italy’s Supreme Court Orders the Country to Compensate Migrants Stranded in 2018

Politico reports that the highest court in Italy, the Corte Suprema di Cassazione, has ruled that the state of Italy must pay compensation to a group of migrants, mostly from Eritrea, who were held against their will on a boat of the coast in 2018.

The justices remanded the case back to the lower court to calculate the amount of damages owed.

Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the decision on X.
