The Hits Just Keep Coming: IRS Reportedly Nears Deal with ICE to Share Undocumented Immigrant Tax Information Undocumented immigrants – report
![]()
For years, many undocumented immigrants have filed federal income tax returns, often using Individual Tax Identification Numbers (ITINs) rather than Social Security Numbers. Annually, undocumented immigrants pay billions of dollars in taxes. In the past, the Internal Revenue Service has not sought to use data collected in tax collection in immigration enforcement. The Trump administration may change things up.
The Guardian (UK) reports that the IRS is nearing a deal to allow immigration officials to use tax data in President Trump’s Immigration enforcement efforts, according to the Washington Post. Under the proposed agreement, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could provide the names and addresses of undocumented immigrants — presumably through tax returns using ITINs — to the IRS. The agreement likely be “the first time immigration officials have relied on the tax system for enforcement assistance in such a sweeping way.”
