In Section 11 of an executive order on protecting the nation against “invasion,”  President Trump directed the Department of Homeland Security to engage state and local governments in immigration enforcement through agreements authorized by the immigration laws.

ImmigrationProf blogger Austin Kocher in “Trump is Quietly Building a Deportation Army out of State and Local Agencies “ discusses the rapid expansion under President Trump of Immigration and Nationality Act 287(g) agreements between the U.S. and state or local governments to assist in the enforcement of the immigration laws.  He reports that “the number of signed 287(g) agreements has exploded. As of April 11, there are 444 active 287(g) [Memoranda of Agreements (MOA)]. That’s over three times the maximum number of MOAs that have ever existed. And that doesn’t count the additional 75 MOAs currently pending, which means we will soon see well over 500 signed 287(g) agreements.”  In 2010, there were 80 or so MOAs.

The state and local agencies entering the 287(g) agreements also has expanded.
