Federal Judge Halts Trump Deportations in Colorado Amid Fears of False Gang Membership Allegationsies
Its hard to keep score of the wins and losses in litigation challenging the Trump administration’s seemingly never ending immigration enforcement measures. Newsweek reports on the latest.
A federal judge has halted the removal of immigrants in Colorado under the 1798 Alien Enemies Act.
U.S. District Judge Charlotte N. Sweeney issued the emergency order yesterday in response to a request from the American Civil Liberties Union, which is representing two Venezuelan men detained in Denver. The men expressed fears of being falsely accused of ties to Tren de Aragua, a violent gang Trump has claimed is part of a broader “invasion” of the U.S.
Judge Sweeney’s order blocks the removal of any noncitizens currently in custody within the District of Colorado who might face deportation under the Alien Enemies Act.
