Its on Us? “How the public’s shift on immigration paved the way for Trump’s crackdown”
Jill Colvin for the Associated Press has an insight worth pondering for a moment:
“Since returning to the White House, President Donald Trump has launched an unprecedented campaign of immigration enforcement . . . . But unlike in his first term, Trump’s efforts have not sparked the kind of widespread condemnation or protests that led him to retreat from some unpopular positions. . . . Instead, immigration has emerged as one of Trump’s strongest issues in public polling . . . . “ (bold added).
There have been some protests. Need there be more? In light of the high publicized excesses (for example, the arrest and threatened removal of a lawful permanent resident protest leader, the removal of noncitizens to a Salvadoran prison without due process, the wrongful deportation of a long term resident lawfully present in the United States, to name a few). Has popular sentiment toward immigration enforcement shifted?
UPDATE (April 28): Maybe the tide is turning on public attention? “A new Washington Post-ABC-Ipsos poll released Friday put Trump at 53 percent disapproval among Americans on immigration, with 46 percent approving. A different poll from the Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs also released Friday reported the exact same numbers — 53 percent disapproval among adults and 46 percent approval.” Ali Bianco, Politico
