Donald Trump’s Response to Question on ‘Due Process’ Sparks Alarm
It should not be a surprise in light of the Trump administration’s invocation of the Alien Enemies Act but President Trump has questioned whether Due Process protections apply to noncitizens who face removal from the United States.
Jon Lemon for Newsweek considers President Donald Trump‘s response to a question about “due process” during an interview appearance on NBC News’ Meet the Press this weekend.
“Your secretary of state [Marco Rubio] says everyone who’s here, citizens and non-citizens, deserve due process. Do you agree?” host Kristen Welker asked the president during the interview.
Critics have warned that the administration has not followed due process in some cases in its mass deportation campaign.
The case of Salvadoran national Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported, has drawn significant attention. The administration said the deportation was due to an “administrative error,” but has thus far declined to facilitate his return to the United States. A unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the administration must do so.
Has President Trump declared a war on due process to facilitate his mass deportation campaign? What about the Fifth Amendment? Details, I guess, one might say.
