Georgetown scholar released after ICE detention in Texas

CNN reports that, earlier this week, Georgetown University scholar Badar Khan Suri was released from a immigration detention in Texas.  He is at the least third scholar or student lawfully in the United States targeted by the Trump administration for arrest and detention for protest activity.

U.S. District Court Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles ruled that the U.S. government had failed to provide any evidence to continue to detain Khan Suri, who has been in a Texas immigration detention facility for two months.  The judge ordered Khan Suri’s release without bond.

According to CNN, “Khan Suri is one of several non-citizen international scholars, faculty and students who have been detained or targeted for immigration enforcement as part of the Trump administration’s effort to target noncitizens who have participated in pro-Palestinian activism. Others include Mahmoud Khalil, Rümeysa Öztürk, Mohsen Madawi and Momodou Taal.”
