As blogged here, President Trump has threatened to punish so-called sanctuary cities.  In Trump wants to cut funding to sanctuary cities and towns – but they don’t actually violate federal law for The Conversation,  Benjamin Gonzalez O’Brien and Loren Collingwood point out that there is no single legal definition for sanctuary cities and other places with policies with respect to immigrants. Although sanctuary cities often limit local coordination with federal immigration authorities, that is not unlawful:  “[T]here is no federal requirement that state or local governments participate or cooperate in federal immigration enforcement, which would require an act of Congress.”
