WIRED is KILLING it with immigration coverage: Hackers get GlobalX flight manifest, CBP to photograph those exiting US

Who knew that WIRED magazine–with its focus on “how technology is changing every aspect of our lives”–would become a go to for immigration news?

Here are two of their latest immigration & tech stories.

First, Hackers penetrated GlobalX, the company behind the ICE Air. For a three paragraph story, it contains a plethora of fascinating details:

  • The hackers obtained flight manifests for multiple flights including the transportation of Venezuelans to El Salvador’s CECOT.
  • The manifest revealed that Ricardo Prada Vásquez–a man whose whereabouts were unknown–is at CECOT.
  • The hackers defaced the GlobalX site itself and wrote: “Anonymous has decided to enforce the Judge’s order since you and your sycophant staff ignore lawful orders that go against your fascist plans.”
  • Immigration advocates have responded to the leak by questioning “whether the government itself had deportation records as comprehensive as the airline whose planes it chartered.”

Wow.

The second bit of news is also fascinating: CBP plans to photograph everyone leaving the US by car–including those “including people two or three rows back”! The idea is to use facial recognition technology to determine which undocumented migrants have followed the Trump administration’s advice of self-deporting.
