Germans Follow US Lead on Afghanistan
Check out this Politico report from Europe regarding Germany’s pull back from commitments to resettle Afghan refugees.
Certain “particularly vulnerable” Afghans, who had been identified for resettlement in Germany, have been waiting in Pakistan for their transition to Germany.
However, when German Chancellor Friedrich Merz came into office in early May, he “effectively” suspended the program. This has stranded many Afghan refugees in Pakistan (who, it should be noted, is not loving their continued presence).
Politico notes that Germany’s behavior tracks Trump’s attitude towards refugee assistance generally and Afghans in particular (see here and here). As in the US, “Some German government officials are also raising doubts as to whether Afghans in resettlement programs have been properly vetted.”
