Hurrican Katrina 20 Years Later: The Impacts of Mass Disaster on Immigrants

It was 20 years ago that Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans.  To check out pictures of the devastation from NPR, click here.  The hurricane affected immigrants as well as U.S. citizens. For analysis of the impacts on immigrants, click here.  Immigrants were affected, feared accessing emergency services, and were critical to the massive rebuilding efforts that followed.  The same dynamics can be seen in mass disasters in 2025, such as the Palisades and Altadena fires in the Los Angeles area.
